What Is Spiritual Direction?

Spiritual direction is a sacred practice that invites you to explore your relationship with God  through deep listening, reflection, and discernment

A spiritual director serves as a compassionate companion, helping you notice Gods presence and voice in your daily life. This journey fosters clarity, insight, and a deeper awareness of Gods movement in your life.

We welcome individuals from La Crescenta, Montrose, Glendale and surrounding  communities seeking this meaningful practice.

Why Seek Spiritual Direction?

When was the last time someone truly listened to your heart–your soul?

Many people rarely experience deep, attentive listening. Spiritual direction provides a safe,  sacred space to explore your questions, joys, struggles, and longings with a caring guide.

Here, you are free to be honest and open, discovering how God is inviting you forward.

The Ancient Roots of Spiritual Direction

The practice of spiritual direction dates back to the Desert Mothers and Fathers of the 3rd to  5th centuries—early Christian mystics who sought solitude and simplicity in the deserts of Egypt  and Syria.

People were drawn to their wisdom and traveled to seek spiritual guidance, laying the foundation  for the tradition we continue today.

How Is Spiritual Direction Different from Therapy?

While both therapy and spiritual direction offer deep listening, their purposes are different:

Therapy focuses on mental health and behavioral change. Spiritual direction focuses on deepening your relationship with God (or the Divine) and  nurturing spiritual awareness.

In Spiritual Direction:

  • Theres no diagnosing or fixing—only sacred listening.
  • Sessions explore the mystery, presence, and movement of God
  • The relationship includes you, the director, and the Spirit as the true director.
  • Sessions often begin with a centering practice like silence, meditation, or candle lighting.

How Often Are Spiritual Direction Sessions?

Most people meet with a spiritual director once a month, though frequency can be tailored to your needs.

Is Spiritual Direction Only for Christians?

Not necessarily. While some spiritual directors work within a Christian framework, many welcome individuals of other faiths, or who identify as spiritual or non-religious. Spiritual direction offers a safe, inclusive space to explore your spirituality, regardless of tradition.

Important Considerations

Please note: Spiritual direction is not a substitute for therapy. Spiritual directors are ethically  discouraged from working with individuals experiencing severe mental illness unless they are  under the care of a licensed therapist or psychiatrist and following prescribed treatment.
